Angry Possible ecu fault, need help.

Hi Mercedes Benz fanatics, i am a new benz owner (2001 clk430 with 89,000kms). I bought the car 10 months ago and just started to have trouble. The problem (intermittent) in short is that the cel flashes momentarily and the revs drop and if the car is at idle it will stall. If the car is at mid to high rpm the revs drop suddenly as the cel flashes and then the rpm recovers.(the cel does not stay on or store codes) Sometimes the car will do this every 10 - 20 secs other times the car may run for 5 mins.
Symptoms of the problem while the ignition is on and with all lights on cluster on is that the temp gauge will periodically drop up and down, plus i can hear the throttle body clicking and the fuel pump powering up after the intermittent problem is occurring. The car starts every time however when i can hear the throttle body clicking the car doesn't crank straight away when i turn the key. Could it be the ecu is losing power momentarily or a link from das to ecu droping out momentarily? Could bad wiring leading to the ecu be the culprit? I took the car to MB dealership to diagnose the problem the told me that the ecu was faulty and needs to be replaced. The MB dealership quoted me an astronomically high figure for the new ecu. I was wondering what it cost for a new ecu in the states compared to Australia and could i order one throgh a dealer there.
Has anyone out there seen or heard of this problem/symptoms that i am having. I have been searching and researching on the net and at some work shops for nearly a month with no luck.
This is about all the info i can think of need help/advise please.
P.S. i have changed the cps.

You paid a MB dealership for a diagnosis? So what codes were reported on their printed report?

Maybe it is a faulty ECU. Maybe it is one of the many sensors that are inputs to the ECU.

Hi Finn Aussie, i have spoken to injectronics and they told me that these ecu's rarely fail and that he nad never heard of one failing and suggested i check every thing else again starting by cleaning the throttle body.

Still getting used to posting, no codes reported, only a big F in the command section on the print out MB gave me.

I still can't get my head around this...

The car is driveable, so the ECU has not totally failed. There are scores of DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) allocated to pinpoint ECU input/output faults down to component level. Your MB dealer should have reported your fault in detail.

So I would suggest a second opinion. I know that you have forked out already, but this problem could cost you big bucks for nothing! Find another dealership and try there. This time insist on a full story.
