sluggishness due to a gas tank clog?

I have a 1984 300D Turbo which has been unusually sluggish, even when warmed up. My mechanic is suggesting that there is a filtering screen in the gas tank that may be clogged with rust/debris and resticting the fuel flow. Has anyone had or heard of this problem? Thanks!
