Just joined the W123 club - 1983 240D

Just jumped in with both feet into the W123 pool.

Found a nice 1983 240D with 143k miles on eBay in upstate SC.

Had the tie rod assemblies and center drag link replaced, engine mounts, valve adjustment, oil change, done at an independent shop in Greenville (pm me for the name, they were great).

Car runs great, drove it back to Columbia with no problems.

Upcoming work:
Steering box needs to be replaced, about a 5 degree dead spot on center, makes the car feel weird when you are going down the road.
Fix the seats (broken springs), going to try the pool noodle trick first.
Fix one small rust spot behind the left rear tire.
She needs a new exhaust, it's pretty rusty.
Fuel tank cleaning, after seeing the thread I'm sure I have a super sized algae farm going on in there...

I had one success already, fixed the front dome light switch with super glue and the pop-out section out of the top of a Diet Coke can. I didn't think to take pictures as I was doing it but I will do a writeup when I get a chance.

My 16 year old son is absolutely in love with it and can't wait until he gets his license (as soon as band season is over).

Anyone in Columbia, do you have a recommendation on a independent Mercedes garage that knows the old 123's?

Steering box? Does the wheel move without turning the tires? Is that what you mean? If so, you probably only need an adjustment to take out the "slop". Before you do though, you'll need to check your other steering components

I've done mine on both a W123 and W114, took 5 mins. But I made sure the tie rods were right and no play in the steering components first.

I had the mechanic replace the tie rods and drag link before I brought the car home. I saw the work after he completed it so I know everything past the steering box is tight. He told me that he could not get the play out of the steering box after attempting to adjust it, and I would need to replace it.

There is about 5 degrees of dead band in the center. He showed me while the car was still elevated that you can rotate the steering shaft but the output arm from the steering box does not begin to move until you get past the dead spot in the center. That leads me to believe the steering box is the problem.

He's an independent mechanic who works on nothing but Mercedes. He used to work for the company but now he has his own shop, so I have confidence he knows what he is doing.
