^Now the way I read this is if the engine turns clockwise then the cam adjuster should be timed in the "late" position and therefore turned anti clockwise. Therefore the slight rattle may have been the valves just touching the pistons, but I sincerely hope not.
If the engine turns clockwise and you adjusted it clockwise then the VVT cannot operate. Check the direction of rotation by cranking the engine.
