rebuilt fuel knocking

yeah you read it. I cleaned my bosch FI for my 1984 190D 2.2L (with kent bergsmas book). I wanted the results to be....
1. Less smoke out of tailpipe
2. smooth starting engine
3. engine that sounds and runs smooth

I got.
1. Same amount of smoke
2. Smooth starting? yeah a little better
3. sounds and runs smooth? I got a lot of knocking and I could not tell if it ran smoother than it must not have made that much of a difference.

after the cleaning I wanted to stand back and really see her purr...Is the knocking after cleaning pretty standard?
