Unhappy 1998 E320 Starter? Help !

Hi again. My 98 E320 all of a sudden will not start. Clean Battery terminals, good battery, even tried jumping it, nothing. Never had any indication of faulty starter before. Started fine the night before, today, nuttin. I get full power to the dash, all components work, starter is not clicking, just a humming from that general area in engine compartment. I have 184k miles. Hoping for a simple fix other than bad starter. Any ideas? Thank you.,

NOTE: Check engine light came on last week, throwing a P0140 code, however that comes on a lot.

Humming you say. Loud?

humming

Not humming loudly at all. In fact, I could hardly hear it, ,might not even be the starter.

You do know that this always happens when the battery is low?
Did you test your battery?

I'm grinning about two things.

First, how spoiled we have become. I can remember that if you got 80-100k out of a starter that was great.

And I'm bemused by the irony of having a *very* complex set of interrelated systems and hoping that the "quick fix" isn't just replacing a starter with 184k on it. To me that would be preferable to nearly any of the other alternatives.

OP: Please click user CP and edit details so you can add your vehicle and location to your profile. It's often useful information when you're seeking assistance.

Were I you, I'd pull the belly pan and check to be sure the ground strap was in good working, with clean, tight connections.

If that was good, I'd disconnect the battery, pull the starter, and test it.

Also, when you need help on a specific model, it's often far more useful to post in the forum that is specific to your car. This general forum is just that, topics of general application to MBs broadly. In your case that would be the W210 forum.

In any event, I would check the ground and starter and go from there.

Good luck.

Battery

I did not test the Battery but I did try and jump start it with another car with no luck.

I did post on the W210 forum after realizing general was not the place. Thank you again.
