ML350 52k service - worth it???

I have 2 Mercedes and love them both. I tAke great care of them but I am increasingly frustrated with the cost of service. Is it that nessisary to change my brake fluid transfer case fluid and coolant at 52k? I have been reading that it isn't nessisary until 100k. I don't want to be foolish but $700 for the service is crazy

Any advice?

If service manager is suggesting services not listed in your maintenance booklet, ignore him/her.

Otherwise, everything in the maintenance booklet is "necessary." No "permission" to ignore it.

It would help if you told us what year your car is. For example, on my 2001 E-Class the brake fluid should be changed every 2 years/20,000 miles; the coolant is due every 3 years but I don't know if there is a mileage limit there.

On some of the newer cars the coolant is supposed to last 15 years. In any event, $700 is too much money for less than $100 worth of fluids (dealer pricing) and 1 hour of labor.

Or you can just do yourself a favor, pick up a manual and learn how to DIY. That's probably the best way. A coolant flush isn't a difficult task to do. There's a drain plug at the lower side of the radiator where you can just let it all out. Once the fluids out, the hoses can be easily removed. Just make sure to bleed after you refill on Antifreeze/Distilled water.

Changing brake fluid is easy too, but is alot easier with a friend to help mash on the brakes to fully 'bleed' air out. Might take a couple tries in order to get all the air out. Some people use 'power bleeders' in order to do the job themselves.

You save a ton of money by doing everything yourself. Not only is it a good learning experience and allows you to service your own vehicle, it'll keep your wallet happy.

Just my $0.02.
