New Mercedes owner... kind of
As the title hints at, I'm not exactly the owner of the car. It was purchased by a friend who currently has no internet access and isn't so good with computers, so I've been handling his research and parts finding. Less than ideal having to be the middle-man, but you do what you have to do.
The car is a 1995 SL600, not sure on the exact name of the factory color, but it is dark blue, with tan leather interior. It has about 163k miles on it, and was picked up as a project car for about $4k.
It had been repossessed earlier in its life. The majority of the car is in pretty nice shape, but there are a few nasty things, the front bumper has some damage near the tow-hook, it has a little dimple on the trunklid where the hard top was dropped on it perhaps, a few buttons missing from the stereo, a badge missing... things like that.
The owner wanted it to work on something that he hadn't worked on before. He has plenty of experience building simple American stuff, hot rods and racing boats, but had never worked on anything with a V12 before (or with this much electronic/computer stuff).
When it was purchased it was running and driving, but not running very well. There was a clacky noise that sounded like it was in the topend somewhere perhaps, and the passenger side bank smoked a bit. After some thinking, another running V12 was found and purchased for about $1200 including cross-country shipping. After a few weekends of work the old motor was out and the new one in.
The car is running again now and being driven occasionally so it is at least at the "driving project" stage. I can get a few pictures of it next time I am over at his place if anyone is interested.
In our learning process I have used this site a great deal of times, and have found some good information that has lead us to some solutions or pointed us in the right direction.
I have been hesitant to sign up since we know very little about the car and can't offer much of our own advice to repay what we have taken from the site (I personally don't like requesting help when I can't contribute anything myself). We have yet to find anyone locally who seems to know much about them, and we have a few issues going on where my research with the "Search" function is coming up blank, so I've decided to give in.
A big "thanks" is in order for the users of these boards who have helped already, and I hope that we able to learn something to give back (even if it's just what NOT to do).
