Is the ALPINA designation only associated with BMWs?

I just purchased a 2004 S 500 and on the trunk, displayed to the the right of the "S 500" logo, is the word "ALPINA". Based on what I've read on Benzworld, ALPINA is typically associated with BMWs, not Merceredes. Has anyone ever seen this on a Mercedes? Is this an aftermarket addition the previous owner added? Thank you!

Welcome to Benzworld and yes Alpina is for BMW.
