Hi, I have a 1981 300D with about 480K (km) on the clock and shiftiness is the Q: it seems to shift up too late and down too early. Cold shifts are quite jerky, and the rear end breaks out if we change while cornering in the wet.
my climate is S-Cal dry. I'm new to the vacuum and diesel automatic things.
Engine cold 1-2 about 10-20 km/h; 2-3 about 35-40, 3-4 about 90 to III mark on speedo.
Engine hot 1-2 walking pace; 2-3 30, 3-4 60-70 according to the speedo, about 10% optimistic. Are these change speeds in the acceptable range? Once we hit top gear, everything smooths out and we seem to cruise effortlessly at 110-120km/h (boys in blue permitting
and it's a sweet drive.
Vacuum at brake line is a mid-range 20, at trans line about 5. I've adjusted the trans modulator anticlockwise, with improvement, and replaced trans line dashpot, also noticed some improvement.
Switch engine off and we lose all vacuum in about 3-5 min. A leak somewhere, and does this affect trans changes? What other checks could I make?
