Problem with BAS/ESP light not going off after engine start my suv

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I have found some very interesting and useful information here which is what prompted me to join up now. We have retired and live in Mazatlan Mexico, along with our dog, cat and usually problem-free 1999 ML320. We have never had anything major go wrong and this car has been running as great as ever. Except today! A few months ago we had to replace the battery and evidently one of the cables was loose. This morning when we tried to start it, it started to respond and then everything went dark. My husband checked all the fuses and everyone is good. But when we went to restart it, which it did just like that after he tightened up the cable, we have no acceleration, maybe something just above idling. We have turned the wheel all the way from left to right to see if we can get the BASESP light to turn off and return the full acceration power but nothing works. No other lights remain on after it starts up. Brake lights work fine. And the problem is there is no Mercedes dealership within 200 miles of our location. Please anyone have any ideas what to do now? This is rather urgent so would appreciate any info anyone has.
Other than this, the ML320 has been the most comfortable and trustworthy vehicle we've ever had. We've taken care of it and 'she's' taken care of us. We have already called our old dealership in Oregon and they've tried to help us troubleshoot this problem but they keep saying the car needs to put on some type of tester equipment to run diagnostics. Thanks everyone for helping if you can...

Disconnect the battery negative lead for 10 minutes and then try again, turning the lock both ways several times. Also post this question on the following link for best results.
