Although it is called a baby seat sensor its main purpose is to determine if the passengers seat is occupied. If not occupied the air bags on that side will not deploy and that is a lot of money right there, with the main SRS bag, a side impact bag and the A frame sips bag fitted to most cars now.

Plus once the passenger air bag deploys a new dashboard is also required, just think of the expense of a minor accident when there was no one in the seat and this lot goes pop.

On the other hand if your wife was sitting in that seat and you had cheated the system, thus no airbags deployed in an accident and she gets the full impact.

Or you cheat the system and then sell the car to some poor unsuspecting person.
