1981 300D to get '85 Turbo 617.952 Engine

Hello! I signed up to this forum in 2008 when I got my '57 180D but have not used it since I found the Ponton specific site. So I'm back with a new project. I just got a 1985 Turbo Diesel 617.952 engine that I'm going to put into my 1981 300D. I am also going to install a 4 speed manual tranny out of a 240D which I also just picked up. (It was a good day at Pick-n-Pull) There was only 130,000 on the 617.952 car's odometer and the only major problem with the car was the tranny was stuck tight. The front main seal was also leaking pretty bad. I will have the 300 non-turbo engine available for sale at some point (about 1 year. I have a few jobs and a business to run!!) and it only has about 80,000 miles on it. When I bought the 300D four years ago it had a new factory engine put in under warranty at 75,000 miles. It runs great, I just want better power and mileage; and a manual tranny.

Should I use the 123 Forum or is there a better place to get my posts started? I've done a few searches and found quite a bit on the 617 engine but I know I'll have some questions.

If anyone is interested in the remaining parts on the 123 that I took the engine from it was in great condition, the seats look near new. I know it will get picked over quick, but it's at the Sparks Pick-n-Pull and arrived on July 12th.

I'm also a big fan of the '82-'85 turbo diesel VW's and have a recently gone through Jetta that I'm getting 39mpg and drive it 75 - 80mph on 200 mile weekly trips. I have two spare engines for that car and may put one of them in a Samurai that I haven't yet acquited.

I've always loved diesels and now feel I'm beginning to understand how to work on them. Wax in the fuel is one of my secrets gleaned from an old guy on a WV site.
