C-240 won't restart....for a while!

Hi all,

Totally new to this forum and just after a bit of advice really....

We recently bought a 1998 R reg C-240 Estate....Automatic petrol. Hubby got the bus down and drove it home (it did the 10hr journey perfectly).
We had had it about a week before problems started.....he had it out on a long drive in the morning.....perfect. Later on I made what should have been a 10min journey to pick my daughter up, stopping at a shop on the way. When I came out of the shop, the car wouldn't start and the dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree. Phoned hubby and also phoned breakdown. Hubby arrived first and tried it (didn't believe I had it in Park!)....nothing....after about 20mins we tried again, it started perfectly. Breakdown arrived and said it was pre-diagnostic socket so he couldn't tell what the problem was but that he'd follow me to pick my daughter up incase it happened again. It did. He had just managed to get it onto the tow truck, thought he'd try it again and of course it started!
When we got it home, hubby thought he'd take it down the road and back, a 2 minute drive....and it cut out while he was driving it, all power just shut down.
Why is this happening and what can we do about it? We have a beautiful car sitting outside, taxed, insured etc. but cannot drive it We don't have the money to pay a garage to find out what's wrong so we bought a Haynes manual as we'd really like to try and DIY it, but obviously it's not that simple!

Any advice would be gratefully received!
Cheers,
Beaglemama x

I did have a wee search before posting this but have just found a thread which suggests it might be a problem with the CPS....? How expensive is this part and how difficult to replace ourselves? (With the aid of a Haynes and some guidance from your good selves?)

Just phoned our local parts place asking for the CPS and all he has listed is a crank angle sensor?? Anyone know if this is the same part, different name before I go ahead and order it??? Also, what tools would I need to replace this part? Sorry for being a PIA!!

I have never heard a CPS referred to as a CAS but it sounds like it might be the same thing. It also sounds like the CPS is the problem.

It's apparently easy to do on my E-Class but I would check your native forum (W202 in the sedans section) to see if there is a thread with photos and/or instructions. Good luck and welcome!

Beaglemama, please click user cp and edit details to add your vehicle and location to your posts, it's useful information when you're seeking assistance.

When you say it dies and then you get "nothing" when trying to restart, what does that mean -- exactly?

Does it mean you turn the key and NOTHING happens? No lights on the dash, no noises under the hood, it's the same as if you didn't even have the key in the car?

If that's the case, then it is NOT the Crank Sensor.

Typically for the crank sensor it will die and then not restart until it cools down; however, when you try to start it the engine will crank/turn over just fine, it simply will not start. If that matches what you're experiencing, then it likely is the crank sensor.

It's tight as a DIY on the 202 chassis, but not impossible.

Good luck.

When we turn the key, it turns over but will not start, all lights on dash come on....then once it's cool it starts as if nothing happened.

I heard it's tight.....I have little hands though, will have a go

Thanks, i'll do the cp thing

Hi again,

Ok, we have the part now but can anyone tell me where exactly is this located, as you look at the engine?

You're in the UK, so I'm not sure about the configuration. Is it the V-6 or the I-6? If it's the V6, you want to raise the hood to all vertical (latch near the hinge) and remove the air cleaner plumbing and engine cover.

Then use this thread, it's the same engine but larger displacement in an E-class:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...ensor-pre.html

If it's the I-6 it is a little further over. Remember that it lines up / "points at" the edge of the flywheel/ring gear which bolts to the back of the crankshaft and that most of it (the smooth barrel part) is inside the engine.

Good luck.
