Repair of cracked varnish on console

Hi all--the console (where the shifter is) in my 85 380sl is chipping. the wood underneath appears fine; its just the thick varnish that has cracked and is beginning to chip off. can anyone recommend a repair shop? I live in NYC, but am often in Westchester Co., NY and Western MA.
Thank you

I took an old Jaguar to a furniture repair shop, they were able to re-use the existing veneer and simply sand and reapply the clear coat. You will want to ask them to duplicate the thickness and finish to match your other wood pieces and see if they are confident that they can. It's reasonably simple to do and shouldn't cost much, but compare a few shops as prices varied wildly when I had mine done.

There was an upholstery guy in North NJ that my dad knew years ago. He would go to junk yards and strip the wood trim out of cars. Hey would refinish them or custom stain them and then resell them and offer to buy yours back. This is way before ebay but I'm sure you maybe able to find someone that does the same on there or even a mint one for sale on there. I have a crack that goes almost all the way across mine on a 210 and thought of taking it and sanding it out and refinishing it.

During that time period, it wasn't a "varnish" that was applied over the trim, it was a thicker plastic, probably a polyurethane, over a very thin veneer of burl or zebrano. The engineering purpose was to prevent splinters if there was a crash that buckled the cabin pieces.

There are restoration shops, but your most cost effective choice would be to seek out a used replacement, either from a recycler or eBay.

my friend took that piece from his W124 300E, and lightly sanded off the rest of the original finish with very fine sandpaper, and varathaned it. fine sanding, multiple coats, he should have lightly stained the wood before the varathane, it came out lighter than the dashboard wood, but it looks plenty good.
