1983 380sl idle surging

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can help with an idle surging issue with my 380sl before my wife divorces me(it's her car).

New parts include the idle control valve, most vacuum fittings, new fuel pump and filter, newer switching unit(2-3years old).

In the past it has stalled on decel but cleaning the idle control valve occasionally fixed it. Now it doesn't stall, but surges constantly with the occasional few times when it quits and runs beautifully. Then back at the surging. I've sprayed starting fluid and can't find a vac leak. I've even ran water over the vacuum parts to no avail. When disconnecting the Idle control valve the engine idles high with no surging.

Any further ideas anyone??

vacuum leak

Look at your intake manifold at the rear (firewall) side of the engine. You will find a vacuum pipe with a right angle rubber fitting. That fitting is usually overlooked since it is hard to see and reach. It resides in an area of high heat and oil vapors thus is usually the first to deteriorate.
The tubing attached to that fitting goes along the upper firewall to the four-way connector on the driver side. Three tubes go from that fitting through the firewall to "economy" gauge, door locks and climate control.

Happy Hunting and let us know how iy goes.

I have the same issue with my 380sl. From the post it appears to be a vacuum leak, did you resolve it? What was it in your case?
