Post 1992 600SEL

Seeking Solid Advice,

I currently own a 1992 600SEL with lorinser package. The dilemma is the car's main wiring harness is dead. The dealer can order one from Germany for 2200. Purchased vehicle for 3500. Put 3 grand so far. Transmission was rebuilt, fuel injection harness was replaced, coils, plugs, two air mass flow sensors, motor mounts, and two window regulators. The mechanic who worked on the car went on a parts replacement spree but failed to fix the rough idle and check engine.

My big question is whether I should blow the 2200 on the new harness or just retire or strip car and sell parts? The car'e exterior and interior is in tip top shape. Car has only 85,000 orig miles.

Please advice as I am torn whether to fix or not from fear of other sever mechanical failure/.

What do you mean by 'wiring harness is dead'? If it has no power at all, that's probably from a common problem: battery not grounded properly, + cable from battery to main wiring block has an issue, maybe just a corroded connection, might be a blown main fuse, could be a lot of things, most of them won't be fixed by replacing the entire wiring harness.

Sounds like this mechanic is playing 20 questions with M-B parts because he can't diagnose a problem. And there's a good chance that they'll mess something else up replacing the harness, that's a major ordeal to put a new one in. Heaven knows what labor will add up to on a job like that.

If it was mine, I'd break out the voltmeter and start tracking a dead wire back until I found out where power was present. Your real concern isn't another mechanical failure, it's that whomever is working on it hasn't found the problem.

Initially I took the car to TriStar Motors in Glendale, CA with a transmission problem, check engine light, and very rough idle and sputtering. Fixed transmission and installed new fuel injection harness. However, car still ran rough and check engine light kept coming back on. Mechanic decided the coils were done and replaced them too. The whole time the mechanic kept warning me that the main harness was a big problem on these cars and that trying to replace the small components was the way to go. Replaced plugs too, but car would run smooth for 30 miles. 40 miles later, engine would start to run rough and check engine would come on again.

I was in this mess back and fourth from September 2010, till April 2011. Then the mechanic hired and outside electrical specialist to diagnose the harness. They decided harness was a mess and extracted wires and rewired the air mass flow connectors as the original wires were fried too. But car kept running rough. Took the car for second opinion. The second opinion was that the main harness was shorted out and was throwing many error codes. So they told me the harness must be replaced before anything else can be done.

I already took the old harness out. My big question is whether to shell $2200 out for the new harness or just scrap the car. I am going to install it myself.
