Hi there, i have a 1992 500 sel which has been sitting for over a year without being started, i put a battery in it in the morning and it started first turn of the key as you would expect from an old merc engine, it ran smoothly and i let it run for about 10 mins. i went back to it a few hours later to take it down to my friends garage and when i started it up it was misfiring badly and engine was shaking about and was cutting out every time i took my foot off the pedal, also fumes from exhaust had a strong petrol smell but was no thick smoke or anything. Could anyone fill me in as what to look for, should i try the usual plugs, dizzy and leads etc? Any help would be much appriciated, cheers.

i have a 92 400se was siting for 2 yrs 106k miles. started it up 2 months ago same problem as you. while im still trying to fully solve my problem still i did make a big difference from when i first started the car. i changed spark plugs(ngk worked for me i tried bosch 4+ platinum made car worse!!) car ran alot better but not perfect. next i changed fuel filter and noticed fuel pump was leaking(caused smell of gas, unburned fuel, and poor fuel economy)i removed drained and tightened the fuel pump and the pump worked perfect(listen for it to turn on next to rear passenger tire is where its located, you should here a lil motor) car stopped misfire but shakes and idles high still but the shake was so much worse before. also oil change oil filter change. im in the process of replacing ignition coil(car has 2 behind driver headlights) i think one is bad. also i suggest the spark plug wires which im also about to buy. i heard also of MAF, o2 sensor, engine harness causing those problems.
