New to Diesel, Starting Questions...
New to Diesel engines and the forum...bought an 83' 300TD in San Francisco last weekend and drove it about 500 miles home without an issue, beautiful ride...smooth, great on gas, everything worked great, and everything under the hood looks pristine...looks that way, but after sitting one night in 70 degree Los Angeles weather would not start in the morning! Tried priming, giving a little diesel; nothing.
Hit these forums right away and read page after page. Due to some funny behavior with the glow plug indicator (intermittent blinks while driving, inconsistent starting durations, not coming on at all or staying on for several minutes) started there. Took a multimeter to the battery, then the relay, then the relay sockets, wire ends, plugs themselves, etc. and everything tested as it should be (according to figures given widely in the forum and other places on the web). Changed plugs 1,2, and 3 anyway, used a spurt of starter fluid in the air filter and tested before moving on to the other two- started right up.
Drove car around for the day, stopped and started well. Then let sit for a couple hours and went to try it and once again, would not start! Don't want to use starter fluid again (as advised not to a lot in forum) and now believe engine is not getting fuel somehow after it sits for a couple hours. If it starts it runs beautifully, but don't think it's getting fuel after it sits. Big fuel filter was just changed and is brand new, little clear glass pre filter looks clean, a little dark but clean...not sure where to go next? Will test injectors as advised in the forum by loosening and having someone crank, but other then that at the end of my rope after two days of reading and trying to figure out...sound familiar? Willing to work but not seeing anything further in the forums and just don't know what to do next? Any advice? Thanks in advance...
