Selecting the right Star Diagnosis

I've done alot of research on the subject but cant seem to find all the answers to my questions. This info should be new to the forum and will help the next person in the market for the unit.

What's the difference between:
C3
C4
C5

Must have cables for only working on M-benz cars?

Must have software programs included?
DAS
WIS
Xentry

List of company's selling bad and good units?

What do newer software updates provide over older versions?

Why do some scanners work with cars 1989 on up and others 2000 on up (cable issue)?

I'm guessing C5 is the newest version. I found companies selling 4-7 cables included in to their deals.
Since there isn't a way to figure out how well built all the different china units are. Maybe you can post which units to stay away from and which ones are built better then others.

What is going through my head is to buy a C5 with the most up to date software for cars 1989 on up, and works with any computer.

All I *think* I know is you want the Xentry system. My dealer tech told me that it works on the newest MBs and is backward compatible to the older models. I don't know how far back he meant. WIS is a free subscription to anyone with a valid US email address and credit card on file.

Be careful or otherwise you will waste your money. The first thing to learn is that C4 does not mean it is better than C3 or C5 would not need to be better than the two others. C4 typically refers to the Chinese invention of putting a cheap C3 copy to a smaller box and sell it as "C4". Would you buy a tool from me if I call it "C10" irrespectively if it looked like a C4 (which it was when I bought it, except that I would never buy a C4).

The latest SW can handle the same old cars as an older SW release. Sellers are often not aware how far backwards HHT (the simulated version of the old hand held tester) goes. On the other hand, there is not much to diagnose on the oldest cars.

Thanks for the great info. I have another question to add.

What is the current scan tool that M-benz dealer is using for coding and programming. My research isn't giving me correct info. I came up with Vedis, star2000, C3, but not sure which one they primarly use these days.

My dealer is using the Xentry DAS (don't know what that stands for). The older version was called SDS for Star Diagnostic System.

Actually the diagnosis tool has always been Star Diagnosis System, the physical product has varied over years.

From your link one can find the "computer", Star diagnosis Compact:
Daimler AG - Service & Parts net
and the current multiplexer SDconnect:
Daimler AG - Service & Parts net

The previous tool was Compact 3 and the C3 multiplexer is still very popular at independent workshops and favoured by individual MB enthusiasts. Both provide the same functionality, the SDconnect mux is more convenient to use because it does not need a cable between the computer and the mux, it works over WLAN.

Funny that it even has a label for the RS232 to RS485 interface even if the interface box is empty (did you have a look at it?).

From the PC-cable one can see that this tool is not a "genuine clone". I wish you luck with it.

Would be nice if you could take photos from the circuit boards of the multiplexer, that is very important when estimating the tool quality.

PS. why does it not have all AddOn's installed?
