Post 1998 SL500 Convertible top hydraulics

Hi,
I have a 98 SL500 and my convertible top has stopped. I took it to a mechanic several weeks ago and he replaced two of the hydraulic cylinders at a cost of $900. Now it's stopped again. He says two more are bad and they are (I believe he said 8 all together) going to cost me about $1,200 to get those two replaced. Then of course the others could go bad and etc...

There has to be a rebuild kit or cheaper way to fix these. I mean it could cost me over $4,000 just for hydraulics to get the top to work. Can anyone help me with suggestions?

I was told they are aluminum so you can't cut them, repair and reweld.

Thanks in advance
Brent
