I had the same problem with my 1996 S500, on this forum what you will find that if newbies ask for help that seemed to been asked many times before you get no responds, i know I was in your boots. And after going on youtube I found out from a bmw ide what the problem was. Now on the defense of the forum there is a place where we can reference old resolutions. That being said here's what you need to check: ignition coils, I ran the code and it pointed me to the cylinder that was misfiring and i popped that one while the engine was running and if it ran with no change it's fine, but if you pop the defected one you will know right away the engine will rumble, That's the coil that needs to be replaced and you will be back in business. I thought it was everything from fuel filter to engine mounts. Until doing so as described now my S500 is running sweet as pie. let me know how u made out and if there's anything else with this prob.

Thumbs up

My mishap, what you want to do is while the engine is running and after getting the code to let you know which cylinder is misfiring. Pull the defected cylinder ignition coil and test it by putting it in to a good cylinder, when you do this and the engine still vibrates, that's your bad ignition coil. Replace it and all will be pie, now you can also let the engine run and pull one by one until the engine does not vibrates/smooth out and you would have found it without the need of a code. either way and I've done both you will find the bad one.

Hope this helps it did help me,
