Unhappy Am I doomed to attend the dealer??????

Hi guys, any help welcomed..I have a year 2000 slk 200k. I take great care of it, and I have it from new.Last Sunday for the first time ever it failed to start at the first attempt. The starter spun the engine well. Now this happens sometimes but not all the time. I replaced the fuel filter spark plugs and the fuel line pressure seems ok. Am I doomed to attend the dealer??? Any ideas of where to go next.
Thanks
Fab

Does it mainly happen when the engine is still hot or also with a cold engine?

When you switch on the ignition to position 2, can you hear the fuel pump buzzing? If not, could be a fuse, relay or the pump itself.

Hooking up the OBD port to a reader may point you in the right direction.

Hi. More information needed.

1. Did it start eventually? How did it run then?
2. You said "for the first time ever.." but also said "this happens sometimes but not all the time". What do you mean here?
3. How many miles, and is all servicing done?
4. When the engine refused to start, were there any error lights of the cluster?
5. Is your battery is good shape? How old is it?
6. When the engine refused to start - was it hot or cold?

Thank you so much for your response.Answer 1. When I turned the key the engine spun strongly for 4 seconds before 'catching'starting'. It ran perfectly. 2 .For the first time on Sunday, and then sometimes since then ,ie Monday Tues etc. 3. It is an old car (100,000 mls.)but maintained like new in every way. 4. No lights on. 5 Good battery.
6 both hot and cold. No codes have shown at my local (non main dealer) garage. The fuel filter is new, the fuel pressure is good, new plugs etc.
It runs brillantly on the road. I am kinda hoping it's the air mass meter, as I am told that it does not show up on faults? Realy thanks for reading this

MAF sensor will throw a code (readable by the expensive scanners) but not necessarily a check engine light. If yours is original that's a reasonable place to start.

Thanks for the reply, can a maf fault cause my troubles, do you think? My local garage showed no fault, but you suggest I go to the main dealer and it will show if it is the mfa or not? Thanks.
