Air conditioning leak - MB 2000 320 CLK

I've got a pin hole leak in my air conditioning system. The MB dealer wants $1200 to fix it but I was wondering if anyone has tried to just add the stop leak additive to try and fix the leak. The dealer says it wont work and in fact may damage the air con system - but the independent air repair guy says yes. I live in Canada and only need it 2 or maybe 3 months of the year - so it is not that much of an issue if I get it repaired or not. I would rather try the cheap alternative first!

Thanks for your help
