Welcome to the w124 family and to make you comfortable I too am a first time owner to a 400E. Its awesome that you got all of the books and service record book as well, I was unfortunate. But, I've learned a lot about my car and I will share some of that with you. Ok, the second gear start is normal and some times I have noticed that mine will start in first on cold days. I think that may be due to the engine wanting to warm up to a good temperature. From stop signs it may start from second but if its moving to slow then it should down shift to first and then shift back to second. If you want to make sure its shifting well then go for a drive, warm it up, and put your foot down and it should launch off in first and so on to what ever gear and speed you wish. If you begin to accelerate the car and then you stomp down to late it may shift into second and rapidly down shift (basically from gear 1 ---- 2-1) this is NOT recomended. Just start from a complete stop. Do the same at cruising speeds to make sure the tranny is shifting up and down when it needs to. You do know that at the floor of your pedal there is a button that must be pushed by the pedal that will down shift and accelerate the vehicle? As for what to look for...just see if all the electronics work (switches) and listen for knocking, clicking, noises etc in the engine bay while idling. Also turn the A/C on full and check that the fans in the front are working. (may take some time to get them to turn on) Also check that when you turn the dial from cold to heat that you hear a noise from the ducting ( like a flap closing, but only once) this is good because from the factory it was designed to not blow hot air in your face. If you can find out from the service book/reciepts or who you purchased it from, if the wiring harness as been replaced. I personally have not done mine yet but Ive heard that if you dont want to see it burn then look into getting that done. And last I would track the fuel economy, just to see if the engine is still efficient. expect about 18-22mpg. Oh and enjoy the lack of cupholders! At least I do...its a message from the engineers "dont consume anything in this vehicle" and to make sure you dont, they did not incorperate any cuphloders in the car. lol
