Picking up 1994 E420 1st time MB owner

Hi my name is Keith and I'm from Denver. I'm buying a 1994 e420 sedan, the price is right, being at $2900 but it has 190K on the odometer. The interior is in rather nice shape, the exterior has some blemishes on the front and rear bumpers. I know it needs brakes and tires. The test drive went fine except for the vehicle starting in I believe 2nd gear but shifted fine otherwise, is that normal? I may have had it in 2nd gear, it was confusing. It looks good, seems to run fine, shifts fine other than the 2nd gear start, handles nicely, has all books/owners manuals, and service records...doesn't leak or over heat (so far). What should I look out for? I've never owned a Mercedes before. Thanks for your help...sorry so noobish.

Welcome to the w124 family and to make you comfortable I too am a first time owner to a 400E. Its awesome that you got all of the books and service record book as well, I was unfortunate. But, I've learned a lot about my car and I will share some of that with you. Ok, the second gear start is normal and some times I have noticed that mine will start in first on cold days. I think that may be due to the engine wanting to warm up to a good temperature. From stop signs it may start from second but if its moving to slow then it should down shift to first and then shift back to second. If you want to make sure its shifting well then go for a drive, warm it up, and put your foot down and it should launch off in first and so on to what ever gear and speed you wish. If you begin to accelerate the car and then you stomp down to late it may shift into second and rapidly down shift (basically from gear 1 ---- 2-1) this is NOT recomended. Just start from a complete stop. Do the same at cruising speeds to make sure the tranny is shifting up and down when it needs to. You do know that at the floor of your pedal there is a button that must be pushed by the pedal that will down shift and accelerate the vehicle? As for what to look for...just see if all the electronics work (switches) and listen for knocking, clicking, noises etc in the engine bay while idling. Also turn the A/C on full and check that the fans in the front are working. (may take some time to get them to turn on) Also check that when you turn the dial from cold to heat that you hear a noise from the ducting ( like a flap closing, but only once) this is good because from the factory it was designed to not blow hot air in your face. If you can find out from the service book/reciepts or who you purchased it from, if the wiring harness as been replaced. I personally have not done mine yet but Ive heard that if you dont want to see it burn then look into getting that done. And last I would track the fuel economy, just to see if the engine is still efficient. expect about 18-22mpg. Oh and enjoy the lack of cupholders! At least I do...its a message from the engineers "dont consume anything in this vehicle" and to make sure you dont, they did not incorperate any cuphloders in the car. lol

V8MERC124, Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. As it turns out sometimes it will start in 1st and sometimes it starts in 2nd. The tranny was in fact low on fluid and it took almost a 1/2 a quart of fluid to bring it to where it needed to be. Needless to say the car now shifts much nicer. As well I pushed that little button under the hood to see about trouble codes and had gotten a 26, upshift delay switch over valve. That's when I added the tranny fluid, disconnected the battery for 40 minutes, and waited. In anycase after a 65 mile drive down the highway @ 75mph..everything is fine. Re-checked for codes and there are none. As for the cupholders...the previous owner drilled one into the drivers door...you know, one of this fold up ones....tacky as hell but functional. Air and heat all work as they should on high & low. Just need to see why all of a sudden the head rests no longer fall, the alarm LED doesn't flash but the alarm works, and why the rear window shade doesn't go up or down...the switch makes a loud click you can hear from the rear of the car....but otherwise the car runs nice and drives fine...i love it.

What is this button you talk about?
And about the sunshade....you have a sun shade! maybe it was an option after 93.
Good to hear that the car is functioning well!

Yup, it has a retractable sun screen that goes up right in front of the rear glass inside. According to the window sticker (included with the books) it was a $400 option. You don't know about the button? On the passanger side of the engine bay, right in front of the cars I guess it's the ECM, right in front there's a cover and I can lift it up and there is an 8 prong diagnostic port...On the #4 port there's a tiny LED and to the left is a tiny button and you push it and the LED lights up and within 3-5 seconds you release the button and if it flashes you count the flashes and you match the number to what it says in a repair manual and there's your issue... Mine has a 1993 manufacturing year but was sold as the 1994 model. I'll take a picture of the button tomorrow...well later on today.

Mines a 93 year model but built in sept of 92. Yeah post a pic, Ill have to check that out. And according to my manual it says that only california cars had a check engine light, mine is from new york originally. Do you have a check engine light? Im assuming you only press the button when the light comes on?
