E Class Electrical problem

I'm new to BenzWorld and wonder if anyone can help.

I have a 2002 E240. Last December whilst parked at the airport for a few days in freezing weather the battery went flat. When the car was started and fully charged the battery seemed fine but over the next couple of weeks occasionally the remote unlocking would not work; I guessed it was some sort of load shedding and as the battery was quite old so I got a new battery.

However, the problem of intermittant remote unlocking failure continued; I tried the spare key but the result was the same. The failure of the remote unlocking to work is intermittant and usually occurs if the last journey was a short one. I then have to use the pass key and the larm goes off until the key is in tth eignition.

Yesterday, having left in the car in the garage for 3 - 4 days, the alarm went off, the remote unlocking would not work and the key wouldn't work in the ignition - the battery was flat again! I got roadside assistance to help start the car and again, the battery test shows that the battery is fine (its only 3 months old so it should be).

I'm not much of a mechanic myself but: -

I've discounted the key as the cause because I've tried both keys with the same result.

I don't think it is a hardware fault as it is intermittant.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions???

Due to the extreme cold and length of time it was left; it is entirely possible that a cold solder joint has let go or a circuit board has cracked. My 300E popped a solder joint that would intermittantly cut out the motor while underway.

So what you are saying if you leave the car for a few day's the battery is flat?

Parasitic draw.


I know it sound's stupid, but have the alternator tested.

It MAY be charging, but if the volt regulator is stuck, it will lose alot of amp's just sitting.

If the alt test out good (which I dont think it will) do a power draw test.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I had the Alternator tested and it came out ok.

I also had the battery checked out after turning the engine off - there was no unusual drain but then again it is an intermittant fault.

I really appreciate all the help.
