Newbie MB owner with a '93 300D that runs hot...

I just bought this car for 2k.

I either have a bad temp gauge, coolant system issue, bad head gasket, or a cracked head? The first two I think I can live with.

The temp gauge spikes randomly, and if I smack/tap the dash it drops back down to normal operating range 82-9_)... almost always... sometimes no.

After 450ish miles the low coolant light came on. I purchased MB coolant, and filled it, correctly mixed. The level has gone down some, not much, and I've topped it off, repeatedly. I understand that this CAN be expected as the air bubbles out. This has now resided, level has maintained, and the gauge only creeps up when idling around town now. To like 100?? Also, I am hoping that air pockets could have been the culprit in the bouncing ball behavior of the temp gauge? This "jittery" action is different then then the random SPKIE to over 120. The SPKIE is what is rectified by smacking/tapping the dash. I had another owner / mechanic (same make model) take a quick look at it. He looked at the coolant tank and noticed it was black inside and thought it may be OIL which means BAD/CRACKED head. From past car experience, I knew of coolant going into the engine, but not the other way around.

Now, IF the previous owner did what I have done with past cars, and used Radiator Stop Leak Coolant additive to try to avoid replacing the radiator, could that be the black residue?

I really like the car, and intend to run BioDiesel or even straight WVO, but I can't afford a bad engine.

What do I do? Thanks.

Pros, not that any trump the cons of a bad motor, but...

-New tires
-MB AMG? wheel package upgrade
-All new MB suspension - 12 months
-All new Brakes/Callipers/Rotors - 12 months
-All new MB Exhaust, complete - 12 months
-Past MA State Inspection!!
-Mechanic that did the inspection informed me of all the work that had been done, NOT the previous owner, so it's not TOTAL BS.

But still... thanks for your help. IT GUY
