2004 C320 "Chirping" Alarm Goes Off for No Reason WHY?!?!

I just bought a 2004 C320 6-speed manual, V-6 sedan. I love it.
-Except that the alarm is incredibly unpredictable and goes off while I am away from the vehicle sometimes after 10 minutes or so. The sound is a very loud and inconsistent chirping. The alarm does not stop when I use the smartkey to unlock the car or insert the key into the ignition. It seems to have its' own brain. And, no matter what normal locking/unlocking procedure I follow I cannot rely on a consistent result. I took her to my mechanic who offered me a variety of explanations -but so far, no predictable solution.

Do I need to have the smartkey reprogrammed/batteries replaced?
Or, does the alarm itself need to be serviced (still under 3-month warranty)
Or, is there something I might be doing wrong in conjunction with locking with the smartkey/using the anti-tow switch?

I understand that the chirping might have something to so with a "Netherlands" setting..
