One week new and everything I hoped it would be.

Until this morning. Flat tire, no problem, the original unused spare is in the trunk.

Lot's of problems getting the lug bolts off but finally won out.

Mounted the spare, tightened the lug bolts, put it in gear and it wouldn't move. The wheel was frozen in place.

Towed to the local garage.

Sir, you need to use the shorter lug bolts with the spare tire. The standard lug bolts were too long for the spare and penetrated into the parking brake.

I've read the user manual many times and nowhere is there mention of short bolts to be used for the spare.

Where did I go wrong?

The shorter lug bolts should have been in the trunk with the spare tyre, did you not see them?
