Salesmen will focus on monthly payments. The better salesmen are pretty good at getting the customer to an "affordable" level and gettting the customer to sign on a higher interest rate, longer loan, etc etc. It's pretty much best to break out the pencil and paper and write the different possibilites while talking to the salesman. Dealers can only go down so far so your best off finding one of the cheapest on autotrader first and working from there. The point of negotiating is for both sides to come out better so don't go in and try to bust his balls so he can't make anything. Kind of a choppy paragraph but it's got my main points.
