Question 1997 S320 Fuel Cooler Leak - Bypass Part?

I have an ac leak at the fuel cooler. Since it has been that way for a long time and i can't hold coolant and the car drives great, is there any reason to replace the part? I know it is supposed to prevent the vapor lock, but I'm out of money and can't afford a new part and cant find a used part. Would it be possible to just bypass the part altogether and connect the ac lines going in and coming out and bypassing the part all together?
