C220 Instrument Cluster issues

I just bought a 1995 C220 for my son on kind of a whim and am now having some buyers remorse as I have had to look up three things on this forum in two days- Idle surge, cruise control, instrument cluster.

The first two aren't crucial yet, but the third is. The cluster began malfunctioning the day we got the car home. It started with the speedometer and now none of the guages work. I have read all of the posts suggesting replacing bulbs. The Tach bulb is out. My question is- by the pictures of the cluster, there are several bulbs, the illumination bulbs and the idiot light bulbs. Which should I replace?

I like to tinker around with things and this will be a good learning experience for my son, but I didn't anticipate three things in the first two days. On the positive side, the car got 30 mpg on the way home, beating our 2010 Elantra by 2 mpg.

It sounds like more than one thing (bulbs) is wrong. I would first remove the cluster and check the connections (clean corrosion, reattach or replace as necessary). If those seem good and if worse comes to worse you can send it to the manufacturer to refurbish it.

Thanks for the reply. By connections, do you mean the two wiring harness connections with the pins? I read somewhere that you should spray them with CRC electrical cleaner. Are these the only connections to worry about? We need the car daily, so I can't afford to be without while the unit is being refurbished, so I am going to have to try myself first. There is at least one bulb out, the one that lights the tach. I will replace the main clear bulbs while the unit is out and hope for the best.
