Hi everyone, just had a quick question. Recently bought a '98 ML320 that's unlike anything I've ever seen with this brand. Pictures are attached (took them today after cleaning it).

I've never seen anyone do anything custom to a Mercedes. Most people tend to keep them EXACTLY as they were when they bought it from the dealership. So I gotta ask... just HOW unique is the Mercedes I bought? Has anyone else lifted one and put the grille/brush guards on it like this?

The guys (salesmen and mechanics) at the local Mercedes/BMW dealership told me they had never seen anything like it. Normally I would chalk that up to BS, since most people who work at dealerships are full of it, but I didn't buy it from them.

I've definitely gotten a LOT more attention in this than anything else I've ever driven.

Just curious. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I can't say that's been my experience. Most of the MB guys I know (myself included) have modified their cars, some are more subtle than others and some are performance-oriented rather than "style".

I would say that the 163 and 164 folks do seem a bit more likely to keep them closer to stock, but if you browse the forum galleries you'll find lots of examples.

I do like the brush guard on yours. In any event it's all about what you like because it's yours.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know there were many others out there who customize their Mercedes, at least style-wise. I do know a couple of guys who modified their engines, but they never touched the exterior. I've just rarely seen it myself. I'm still new to the forum so I'll look around. I'm interested to see what others have done.

And you're right, it's all about what you like when you buy a vehicle, Mercedes or not. I absolutely love my new car!

I love your new car too. Looks very cool like that, reminds me of the Jurassic Park ML, which was definitely a modified car. lol
While unique it, of course, doesn't add any value to most people and in fact these modifications tend to lower resell values on our cars because, as you noticed, most buyers prefer a car that is stock.
Next step, olive drab or desert tan in matte maybe? That would be pretty intimidating. Enjoy your new ride!
