Gas lid lock

My 2003 SL 500 has been garaged until recenly, with trickle charge. Been driving 200 miles or so and needed a fill up. Could not open the compartment. Wondering whether this is due to the elctronic system. More imprtanly, what is the fix?

Most Mercedes owners manuals contain instructions for manually opening the gas filler door from within the trunk.

If the mechanism is broken, the fix is a new one. Could also check electrical connections.

If yours is vacuum operated, I suggest that you first spray silicone spray through the crack onto the pin that locks the door, and let it soak in overnight. The dry pin can develop so much friction that the vacuum motor can not retract the pin. Alternatively, spray the pin and pull on the emergency release as per your owners manual. Once it frees up, give it a shot of silicone once a year and work it to get the lube back inside the unit onto the o-ring or whatever causes so much friction when the rain washes the lube off.

All this assumes that you do not have a vacuum problem. The above fixed the unit on my E class which was inoperative when I bought the car used.
