Angry 88 560SEL Starter woes

Well I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I have bought two remanufactured starters and have installed them and they were both defective; the bendixes would not engage at all. So I took the original Bosch starter to a rebuild shop here and had them rebuild it and I've installed it and it is trying to engage with the flywheel but it isn't working. I've taken them out and put them in so many times over the last two weekends that I feel I could do it blindfolded. When I called around to get pricing from the local parts stores at the beginning of this project almost three weeks ago, one of them said a center plate was recommended. I've searched benzworld and other sites and i don't see any reference to a center plate. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what am i missing? Any suggestions? Have a new baby and we can't really afford to take the car in to a mechanic right now. Thankfully we have kind friends who are loaning us one of their vehicles for my wife to use but we don't want to have to end up making car payments to em! I have downloaded the W126 Service Manual but don't find anything additional there to this situation on the R & R pages for the starter. I've uploaded it to this thread for convenience sake for our members. The attachment is in PDF.

Three starters that can't successfully engage your ring gear leave a dark suspicious cloud hanging over your ring gear no? We sell quite a few Bosch reman starters and I can't recall ever hearing a story like yours...
