Exchanged parts

What exactly is the definition of "exchanged" when it comes to part that have been fitted to your vehicle? 18 months ago the starter motor went wrong on my sprinter van. The van was in its three-year warranty and Mercedes fitted another starter motor. However, that starter motor has been playing up for quite a long time and has basically almost packed up. I got the AA out to day and he gave the solenoid a bit of a whack and the engine started. He then found a little sticker on the starter motor stating that it was an exchange.

You should seek the help with the slang from English members
I would assume the "exchange" would mean rebuild. Meaning the motor had some problems, was taken to rebuild shop for rebuild and reinstalled in your car.
Just my guess about English shops procedure.

An "exchange" occurs when you receive a rebuilt part, and give the old one in exchange (plus a price, of course). So the part in your car was rebuilt, not new.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I actually knew what an "exchanged" part was, I was just trying to prove to my parents who always think they're right. The dodgy starter motor in my Mercedes van had a sticker on it stating it was an exchange. They were just assuming that exchanged means I exchange mine for a brand-new one. After all there is a big difference between something that is rebuilt and may work perfectly okay, and something that has come straight from the factory floor and has never been on a car before.

Actually, if your vehicle is still under its manufacturers warranty, is a garage perfectly within their rights to replace a faulty part with a rebuilt part?

I believe it is MB policy to allow rebuilt parts so long as the fact is disclosed. You will want to verify this and it may vary with region as well as I know MBUSA is far different than MB in the rest of the world.

The rebuilds in USA have extremely bad reliability records. Seems the shops hire teenagers for minimum wages to do the assembly and that shows the results.
I bought rebuild alternator for my Ford truck, when it failed on the trip and the thing did blink red light from the day 2. The light kept on coming more and more, but ironically the alternator passed the bench test when I took it back. Than it gave away 5 months later, 500 miles from home when no NAPA story in 100 miles radius would stock replacement. Fortunately with good batteries I could drive the 100 miles and get NEW alternator from competition. Guess what? The whole new alternator was $70 cheaper than the rebuild one with core cost added.
