1993 C280 refusing to start

Hello BenzWorld

Maybe you guys can help me out. I am asking on behalf of my brother who owns a C280 made in 1993.

The chassis is a W202, the engine is a 6 cylinder petrol.

Now, the backstory. The car has been in storage for a year, parked in a garage. A few weeks ago he tried to start the car, the battery was dead so we had to change that first.

Once that was done the key was turned, the starter motor engaged and.. nothing.

We checked the spark plugs for sparks (by removing one of them, keeping it connected and then grounding it on the motor block), we saw no sparks.

I have checked the Over Voltage Relay, as I understand most of the time this is where the problem is. The relay however is working, it clicks and puts out power on pins 7-8.. As far as I know this means a working relay.

Here is the relay.

So the motor control unit should be getting power (from what I understand, this is the thing that controlls the spark plugs?), but it is not talking to the spark plugs.

I have checked the fuses that seem important, and I have yet to find a blown fuse.

What else is there to check?

Your ignition coil may be bad.

Also, you should ask on the w202 forum. You will probably recieve more answers faster there.

Thanks for your reply.

Like my tag suggests, I am a newbie at this. But, is there any way to check the ignition coil?

Oh and thanks for the suggestion on the W202-forum, the forum is big so I got a bit lost. :P Can a mod move the thread or should I create a new one? I dont want to spam the forum.

Btw, regarding the ignition coils.. The car should have three, right? Shouldnt it fire on a few of the cylinders, or if one does not work does all three stop working?

Also, I should mention that the first time we tried to start the car, the engine sounded like it would start (it lasted for a second or so), my guess is that it fired then, but not since.

I don't know much about your specific model, so I don't really know what to tell you.

You can just make a new thread in the w202 forum.

Also, you may want to change the fuel filter for good measure.
