Inaccurate information in the book "Standard Catalog of Mercedes-Benz"

I can not recommend that you get the book: "Standard Catalog of Mercedes-Benz" by Jim Luikens and Mary M. Hedberg copyright 2008. Has anyone else had any experience with the book?

I was excited to get this due to fact that the author was the Editor of The Star from MBCA club. I was very disappointed, I am even returning the book to the bookstore. I would like to keep it for the historic photos but it just makes me cringe whenever I see it now.

There are many nice photos and great ads and historical poster pictures. But, once you just start perusing the captions you find it is full of inaccuracies. I became very disappointed finding so many glaring problems even before getting to any technical data which is also problematic.

I would like to post pics of a couple errors but I am not sure of the copyright laws so I will just describe a couple very basic problems. I can't even remember how many errors I read in the first few minutes.

Some errors that are blatant include a picture of a 560SEC and the caption reads "1990 E320 Coupe", another picture shows a 1998 CLK Coupe captioned "SLK Coupe" which doesn't even exist. Technical data is also plagued with problems and the book has many typographical errors. Commas missing in simple things like prices, misprinted model information like 5600 instead of presumably S600, etc.

I lost so much trust in any information presented that it became a useless reference. I would have to have supporting documentation to rely on any information presented within.

I just hope the book was rushed and not edited properly, rather than being a misrepresentation. It really is a shame that it ended up in this form. It would be a great reference, if it were correct and trustworthy.

This is sad and something I see more and more today since anyone can use their own word processing program to write a book and many no longer use real "editors" to scour for corrections that need to be made. Hell, some don't even seem to use the spell check feature. The problem with this is that errors like the one you suggested "5600" would slip by a spell checker but an actual human familiar with the topic would (hopefully) see the errors. I see this even on big name news sites and the like. I have to say I'd do the same, return the book.

I think you can use sections of a copyrighted work for illustrative purposes so long as that purpose if for "parody" or "news" and I believe this qualifies as news but that could be subjective, so it never hurts to play it safe and you explained things well.

Perhaps you can make "lemonade" out of this situation by contacting the author and noting the errors you found. Surely they will be corrected in successive editions which would help other buyers in the future. You could also suggest he hire you as an editor with the promise of "at least two dozen corrections" or whatever the number is you've found. I'd be willing to pay someone who already did the legwork for me if this was my book.

Did you check the disclaimer printed somewhere in the book? It might read something like "... some info might not be as accurate as could be" or "not responsible for any typo ..." or "we did our best ..."

Thanks for your comments DirectLA, all good points. I do think it's sad that we rely more on computers when people still need to be a part of quality work.

I also decided this afternoon to write to the publisher, I think they should be aware. But, I would imagine they already know.

I understand omissions and errors can occur, but I certainly don't expect them every few pages. So, I'm not sure I care whether there is a statement like those you listed. Publications presented as valid, should be.
