Inaccurate information in the book "Standard Catalog of Mercedes-Benz"
I can not recommend that you get the book: "Standard Catalog of Mercedes-Benz" by Jim Luikens and Mary M. Hedberg copyright 2008. Has anyone else had any experience with the book?
I was excited to get this due to fact that the author was the Editor of The Star from MBCA club. I was very disappointed, I am even returning the book to the bookstore. I would like to keep it for the historic photos but it just makes me cringe whenever I see it now.
There are many nice photos and great ads and historical poster pictures. But, once you just start perusing the captions you find it is full of inaccuracies. I became very disappointed finding so many glaring problems even before getting to any technical data which is also problematic.
I would like to post pics of a couple errors but I am not sure of the copyright laws so I will just describe a couple very basic problems. I can't even remember how many errors I read in the first few minutes.
Some errors that are blatant include a picture of a 560SEC and the caption reads "1990 E320 Coupe", another picture shows a 1998 CLK Coupe captioned "SLK Coupe" which doesn't even exist. Technical data is also plagued with problems and the book has many typographical errors. Commas missing in simple things like prices, misprinted model information like 5600 instead of presumably S600, etc.
I lost so much trust in any information presented that it became a useless reference. I would have to have supporting documentation to rely on any information presented within.
I just hope the book was rushed and not edited properly, rather than being a misrepresentation. It really is a shame that it ended up in this form. It would be a great reference, if it were correct and trustworthy.
