Used Clk 430 Question HELP

Im thinking of a getting a used 2001 CLK 430 for $6000.

However there are several issues my brother is bringing up about the car and he is telling me not to get the car. His arguements are:

1. 146,000 miles (parts will start to fail)
2. 3 previous owners
3. reposesed

the finance comany who reposesed the car is selling at a low price to get rid of it becasue keeping it in inventory is costly (he does make sense). I personaly checked the car and it looks great. no leaks under the hood and had all paper work including a carfax report. However my brother is still telling me not to buy it.

What do you guys suggest i do? I really want this car.

If you are not familiar with MB, find a good indie to do a prepurchase inspection. It'll cost you a couple hundred, but it may alert you to a serious issue and tell you to avoid it, or confirm for you that it's okay to proceed.

You might also want to poke around in the 208 forum to get a sense of the common issues with tthe chassis. If you aren't going to DIY, though, this car will is likely to break your bank in routine maintenance and repair.

Good luck.

You're not going to get better advice than what Gregs210 offered. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Thanks for replying. I took a look at the W208 forums and didnt really find anything new. I already know that the MAF is known to fail in the CLK.

I Know i can afford the routine maintenance (service A and B) and somethings i can do myself and somethings i can take to a trusted certified Mercedes mechanic. But can you tell me how much the maintenance cost was your CLK 430?

I know i can get the car if i make a convincing argument. I want the car because i think the W208 chassis is much nicer than the W209 chassis.

MarcusF owns a 2002 CLK 430 and is a very knowledgeable contributor on the W208 forum. Try sending him a PM for the nitty gritty.

The fact that it had three owners in less than 150k Km, tells me that it was not in good hands (well intended as they might have been). The last owner, at least, has not taken good care of the car since, either he could not pay for it, or had problems with it and said somebody else pay for the darn thing.

My bet would be on the pass side, unless you are ready for a true going over bumper to bumper and live with the car as two close friends.

Cheers, JV

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

True that the 3 previous owners is cause for concern, but you must consider that it has traded hands 3 times in 10 years.

If I get it I plan on being best friends with it.

I have decided to take the car in for a prepurchase inspection, hopefully confirming that the car is in good shape for purchase. Any advice on what I should be aware of? Thanks
