Ditto to the others. Yes it needs to be changed but it certainly sounds like the guy has not maintained it properly. Spend a little more money on a car with fewer miles and a verifiable service history.

*Anytime* you have a seller who is reluctant to let you take it to the shop of your choice (at your expense, of course) for a PPI, that is a car to avoid.

Walk away. There are far too many used 210s out there to roll the dice on this one.

Given the full information you provided I also agree that this is not the car to go to 300,000 miles. You would need to start with someone's "baby", a car they cared for like it was the only one in existence. Black oil indicates a lack of timely oil changes, which is the most basic and common maintenance item you can do to a car, so if they failed at that, what else has been neglected. Failed airbag on passenger side? How does he know, sounds like a line of BS, just enough to make you feel that it's safe . (Surely it's not the driver's side airbag, and who needs to be concerned about pesky passengers anyway?)

I'm sorry, but for this car you inherited Truman's sign and the buck stops with you . . .
The car you are looking has long ago passed the MB lemon test, and it is a sound fabricated unit. Now, what illnesses was it exposed since? Passing over the acute, you should concentrate on the chronic and terminal ones: tranny oil level and quality, plus smoothness of shifting, plus maintenance received and what kind; diagnostic of air bag red light, and price to correct; chassis integrity; engine coolant level and condition; power, starting, and ignition components condition and performance; rubber boots and boot grease condition . . . plus balance of items to complete ppi.
You won't be able to get a good idea of what you get into otherwise, and you''ll need to shell out a few bucks to put it back in order if it checks OK.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

Defensive Driving is never having to say you're sorry: a true love story between man and machine.

Honestly, but I think above 100,000 kms is the last lifeline of any vehicle. Whatever the quality is there but it has a age.

sure it will last. if you replace enough parts you can get a yugo to go 5 million miles

nobody can answer such an open question with thousands of variables. dont even know why people try.

vw phaeton. when vw copies mercedes, but forces you to service it next to golfs and jettas

suggestions for Benz with Salvage Title????!!!

Benz folks:

I am getting a well running 2000 S500 with Salvage title. Should I reject it just because it is salvage title? It has very good oil in engine (light yellow color), very good running, breakings etc has around 112,000 miles on it and getting it for 7 grands???? Do you think this will be a good deal? Let me give you more data:

-Exteriors = Awesome almost new
-Engine oil = no dark just new
-Breaks and stops = very good
-miles = 112,000
-Tires = may have to replace very soon
-Transmission fluid = good
-Title = Salvage Title
-Clean = very clean
-Transimission = very smooth

Please advice.....

A salvage title means that some point it was damaged to the point that having it repaired professionally would cost as much as the car was worth. That doesn't mean someone with professional skills might not have chosen to repair it himself. It may have been repaired properly or not.

You really need to know all of the details of the extent of its damages, who repaired it and how. Even if it was repaired perfectly, its future value and resale will always be impaired.
