Greetings from Santa Cruz, California

Hello. I have purchased a 1987 Mercedes Benz 420 SEL. The price was right, and I needed a swift car replacement. Mercedes Benz is a new world for me. Frankly, I'd not expected to be driving such a grand older car.

That said, the previous owners did a very admirable job at keeping this car in very nice shape... so I feel it's important to honor their effort and do the same. I've never been a vintage car enthusiast, persay, but this beautiful automobile is quite an retro-elegant driving experience. I'm enjoying it more and more as each day passes. The interior, including leather seats, is in rather good condition and there are few signs of scrapes and scratches on same. There are some things that need attending to, like a replacement ashtray for the back, new floor mats, body work, some repair on the electrical for passenger windows, etc...

The engine is something I'm getting to know, but I am happy to have the owner's manual and the engine has already proven itself to be a very strong well cared for unit. Soon I will have an overall inspection done and will know more about engine quality.

Any thoughts from 'vintage' Mercedes Benz owners on Helpful suggestions are most appreciated. My first question is if anyone has had any experience with replacing radios. I intend to honor the year of this model, but I have a replacement radio I would really enjoy using instead of the original radio.

Thanks for any insight.

Congratulations on your first Mercedes-Benz and welcome to Benzworld. I just bought a 87' 420 SEL last week too. These cars are one of the most elegant models ever produced from the three pointed star. I've only had mine for a week but I've already recieved many positive compliments from strangers. When I had my 97' S420 I rarely recieved compliments..

If you go to the link that babybenz put up it will take you to the W126 section (which is the chassis number of the 420SEL) Otherwise you can just scroll down the main forum until you find it. Make sure you introduce yourself there and post some pictures of your W126.

About the radio issue. Most (if not all) W126 owners have replaced their radios and sound systems. With all due respect to Mercedes-Benz - the stock radio is junk nowadays. Go to bestbuy or a radio shop and I'm sure it won't cost too much to have them install it.
