EC light usually means your refrigerant is low and the compressor will not turn on as a measure to protect it. My best guess is you have a leak so the thing to do is to locate and fix that then have the system recharged.

Last year, my AC was running fine (EC off) then suddenly the EC light turns on, it was the evaporator temperature sensor gone bad. If I remember correctly, it cost $40 and took 30 minutes to replace.
You need to run diagnostics to see the error code then you know what's really wrong.
Search for "ac diagnostics" and/or "evaporator temperature sensor".

Thanks for info, I searched both this site and googled for info re pulling ac codes. My car has the "luxury AC?" or maybe called digital console? no readout on it and EC and REST button combined just got buttons and 2 dials for temp one pass side other drivers side.
I still need to know if there is a way to pull and reset codes without using STAR tool. I need to get codes reset so compresser will run so recharge can be done and recheck fix leaks. Please help, this is driving me crazy!!
