Speedometer accuracy is traditionally very poor quality in production cars, with a current average of 3% accuracy tolerance, though MB shows 1% for current W204 units. Kajtek recommendation is very practical, as it is to run a speedo test at the dealer, or other shop with the equipment to do it.
It is basic to know where one's speedo stands, specially when showing a speed lower than the real one. The one in a Rover I had was 20% slow, and the test exempted me from points and fine by and understanding Magistrate (despite the law said that not knowing of the existence of a failure causing a transgression is not an excuse to get the violation dismissed).
Fortunately, electronics and controls are getting better day by day, so electronic systems will slowly be getting simpler and more dependable.
A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.
Defensive Driving is never having to say you're sorry: a true love story between man and machine.
