My name is John and I just joined your forum. My only Mercedes was a 1959 300SL that I bought from a girl friend's dad. He bought it new in Germany for $10,000.00 or so. I bought it in 1966 for $3,500.00. Roadster, of course, with hard top and luggage.
Fun car and a daily driver for me. Got it with 59,000 miles and had to put in a new clutch right away. That cost about $350.00 at the time which was big money back in the day. I remember seeing 300 SL's drag racing and they were pretty hot for their class. I sold the car, $3,500.00 again, and got married. No 300 but same wife for 44 years. Now looking at getting a 350, 450 or 280 SL.
The more I read of your forum the more I get cold feet. I read several times if you really want an expensive MB, buy a cheap one. I understand. I have read several horror stories about timing chains parting and getting a rebuild. I have gone thru eBay and saw only one 280 SL. I like the possible simplicity of a 6 banger and figure it could be cheaper to rebuild and might be as much fun as a 450 or 560.
Wife and I are shopping for another roadster and moving to northern California and perhaps joining the SFO MB Club. I would appreciate any insights to 280 SL's and thank you for reading thru this long winded note.
