I'd like to thank this forum and its members for years of extremely information. My 1st MB was a rusty 81 nonturbo 300d that I paid very little for. Also my 1st diesel.
it was slow but fast enough to tool around Manhattan with. I learned how it worked mechanically and replaced glow plugs and was never happy until everything functioned as it should. Well it turned out that a friend had a 300sd and he wanted to give it to me as a blessing. I did not like that body style though. but i looked at it and it had been sitting around rusting for 3 yrs interior was moldy leather. it started right up and i drove it down the block and wow! that car felt like a smaller car than the wood and the turbo I was sold. Now That's a man car. I guess the SDL is a real Mans car, haven't tried one yet.
Anyway I sold the 300d for way more than I paid for it and kept the SD. But Rust takes it's toll. The SD drove great for 2 days then the sway bar end rotted off and I had a new one welded on but they didn't do it right and the car handled poorly after that and after about 6 months I started to hear clunking in the front. My mechanic says "this car no good man" the frame rotted through behind the wheel ugh!
So I sold it to someone with the identical car who needed the parts.
I went benzless for a while and then I took interest in the 190's
I found one 2.5 5 speed but couldn't get there. I looked at another one but it was in poor condition. Then I looked at a 1987 300D This was the cleanest car I had ever been in in my $ range so I made an offer and next thing I know i'm in a sleek clean faster car w/o rust hooray!
This was a great car. til one day I had a job out in pennsylvania. There was no snow forecast for NYC, but PA,s a different animal. Which I was totally unprepared for. Driving out rt 78, worst HWY ever, it was snowing a little then I noticed it was now suddenly below freezing i slowed way down. I was in 3rd gear but it was snow on ice and it was a wash of white. so I was braking and sliding a bit then I thought I should slow further shifting into 2nd, bad idea. the rear end came around and I hit the embankment with the front pass bumper and the car rolled over and slid on its side until a tree met the trunk. So I shut the engine off and was like Thank You Lord! I was totally unharmed. The loss of the car was painful but Im over it now Because Ive found Didymus (The Twin) a grey MB 1987 300D.
Almost as good condition as the other. Same paint same interior.
i'm a Happy MBenzer.
