Fuel system problem - distributor or WUR or??
I replaced the fuel pump on a 1983 450SL that had been sitting for a while. Before replacing the pump it was running fine but after replacing it the car wouldn't start. If I pour some fuel in the intake it will start right up and run for a few seconds until the fuel is gone. During those few seconds, if I pump the accelerator the engine responds and revs up.
Someone told me it was the fuel distributor and/or the warm up regulator (WUR) and they probably needed to be replaced. Would the fuel distributor be faulty if the engine responded when I pushed down the accelerator while it was running on the fuel I poured in the intake? If the distributor were bad I would expect that nothing would happen when I pressed down the accelerator.
I loosened the fuel lines coming out of the top of the distributor and cranked the engine. The was gas coming out of all the connections so does that mean that the distributor is working? I also loosened the fuel connections on the WUR and there was also gas at each of the two lines.
Since the car starts with fuel in the and revs up briefly when I push the accelerator I'm wondering if the fuel system is really OK and there's some other problem.
Thanks for your thoughts.
