Leaky Sunroof

Hi guys, I have a 1987 560 SEL. I just noticed that the sunroof seems to leak. It sits perfect, opens and closes as it should. I just had it painted but can't imagine that having anything to do with it.

I only assume it is the sunroof because that is where the water leaks from but I suppose if it got in somewhere else I still might leak out the sunroof.

Any ideas? Has anyone had a similar problem and what did you do. The car is mint and I hate to see the interior get ruined.

Thanks

Tom

What are thought to be leaky sunroofs often turn out to be clogged drains. The drains are typically found in the front corners of the opening and can be cleaned with a long flexible cable.

I don't know the particulars of your car, but I suggest giving a look. I've dealt with a few "leaky" sunroofs and each turned out to have a clogged drain.

You might consider directing your inquiry to the W126 S,SE,SEC,SEL,SD,SDL Class - Discussion Forum also.

BTW: It's common practice here to complete your user profile, including location, year and model. That information can be useful to those who might consider offering assistance.

Ditto's on the clogged drain. I've had this happen on SAABs, BMWs and a Toyota. I live in Myrtle Beach South Carolina and t usually hits you after the pine pollen and oak leaves falls here in early spring. But this, dust, leaves, all work together to clog or partially clog the drain holes. A long cable---like a motorcycle brake or throttle cable gentle worked through the drain works well.

HOWEVER! One leak on a BMW we thought was coming from the sun roof actually came from the weather stripping around the doors and windows. Everything looked fine, but it had lost some elasticity and when water hit hit at the right angle would bend over and leak.

Good luck!

Thanks I will try the cable first. How did you find the leak around the trim? Was it obvious?

Thanks for responding, really appreciate it!

Not obvious at all. It took a water hose with a stream pointed at the windows. The water was leaking down into the door and through the flexible cable hose between the door and the body pillar. But when some of the seals/weather stripping begins to go, it may be a good idea just to replace them all. We did, anyway---doors, windows and even trunk.
