Post Mercedes STAR DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM (SDS) for 2000 CLK 320

I was messing around online and found a Mercedes star diagnosis system (SDS) Compact 3 manufacturer online from China. I’m thinking of getting a unit for myself and have a mechanic teach me how to run and diagnose the system.

I'm pretty handy with IT hardware, and can navigate software so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Q1: Does anyone have any feedback on these clone systems on reliability and more so… DO THEY WORK? So far I’ve seen mixed reviews.

Q2: Will the compact 3 work on a car released before 11/25/1999 or do I need the Compact 2?

Q1: Clones do work, mostly. A friend of mine got a clone that died before he had run the firs quick test. The point is that there are clones of completely different quality.

Q2: a good C3 is good for you.

Correct, but approx 90% of the Chinese clones work fine. Hope you do not get one of the other 10%, do more homework and speak to the suppliers first. Do a search on this forum as this has been discussed on many sub forums before with different results.

Click the search box, third from right top of this page and enter SDS/Star C3 diagonostics into the google box.

ERIC.

That was a good clarification, my message might have been misunderstood without this. In fact just about all clones come from China (more or less, some may do some local assembly of parts etc.). Perfectly safe to buy from China as long as one orders from the correct shop.

Again, thank you both for the feedback. I am now all for the chinese clones as the technology is there and the only issue is the 10% without proper Q.C. I'll take Eric's advice and flip through the threads.
