Hi guys, im looking to do some maintenance work on my 380SL this week as I am on break from school.

Its been garaged this winter, and I'm bringing it back out to school within a week, there were a couple of issues i noticed before i put it away.

1. Rattle on start up (belts perhaps? not sure)
2. Sluggish acceleration, need to manually downshift if going up a hill.
3. When cold, below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, car wont start in Park, need to shift to neutral to start it, but it starts right up.

I've heard that new spark plugs, oil change, and air filter should do a dramatic change.

I'm new to working on this older car, I've worked on cars before and I know the basics, oil change, breaks, spark plugs etc. I'm a college student, so saving money is a PRIORITY. The car runs fine, but i can tell im not getting the most out of it.

Someone with experience please help me with any recommendation of which products to use, and what to be careful of.

Thank you!

Did it run fine before garaged all winter?
First thing to bring to life from long storage is the battery. Re-charge it fully with a charger.

Sounds like the sluggish acceleration could be the fuel filter.

Not familiar with that specific vehicle, but i used to pull the coil wire on my 560 after each oil change, turn the key to run up a little oil, then reattach the coil wire.

On the topic of the rattle on start-up--is the engine in the 380 SL prone to timing chain slap, rail breakage, tensioner failure?? Might want to do some searching in the proper sub-forum here on the topic of Timing Chain Tensioner just to be sure. Again--i don't know the car so i'm using a different basis for questioning!!
