Question Trusting Transmission Diagnosis

I still love my 1998 E320 wagon but, it does try my tolerance and wallet. The latest problem surfaced as I noticed the car vibrates when I back it up and ran rough when I came to a stop. Ran find otherwise. I thought I needed a tune-up so when I had that done I asked my local shop to diagnose the vibration when I back up. They said I need a new transmission. Is it that runs fine other than backing and stopping?

Apparently, there's programming involved since everything these days is electronic. What about a fluid change? What exactly do the fault codes say specifically? My problem is I don't want to pay a fortune for a car that has little value. So, what to do? My choices, go to a good transmission shop (they say it sounds like programming); or, the dealer (they say it sounds like transfer case) and may need new fluid. I want to trust that I don't start on a long chain of repairs. Can a computer diagnostic give me the answer?

I would very much appreciate anyone's opinion or similar experience.

I would try changing the fluid and see if it helps. It doesn't sound like you need a whole new transmission, but maybe just new springs or something.

Try searching in your cars forum.
